En La torre, Mallea habla de «la torre de la vida» (pág. 311), y su personaje Roberto dice: «De mí no admiro nada, y sólo creo en los hombres que construyeron con sacrificio una torre ideal...» (pág. 399). Cf. las Confesiones de San Agustín: «Et ambo iam tui aedificabant turrem sumptu idoneo reliquendi omnia sua et sequendi te» (Lib. VIII, cap. VI). De San Agustín, pues, creo que deriva el segundo sentido simbólico de la torre, aunque también ha sido propuesto un origen pascaliano («Nous brûlons du désir de trouver une assiette ferme, et une dernière base constante pour y édifier une tour qui s'élève à l'infini...») por Arnold Chapman, «Terms of Spiritual Isolation in Eduardo Malleas, Modern Language Forum, XXXVII (N.º 1-2, 1952), pág. 26. Tanto Pascal como San Agustín son autores favoritos de Mallea. En cuanto a la torre como símbolo de soberbia y de construcción material, recordemos la torre de Babel.
