I should like to think that on at least one of these occasions he met Jovellanos, and that he may even have known something of El delincuente honrado; but he does not mention our author.

Jovellanos, Diarios, ed. Julio Somoza, I (Oviedo, 1953), 495. Rousseau's works were to be found in Olavide's library (Diderot, Don Pablo Olavidès, p. 472). Voltaire's Commentaire sur le Livre des Delits et des Peines, which Jovellanos may have known through Olavide, was on the Index since 1768; and Jovellanos' own Informe [...] en el expediente de ley agraria was prohibited, after his death, in 1825, though the 1948 edition of the Index no longer lists it.
