The novelistic nature of Montalbán's San Patricio is revealed by Professor Dixon's study of the text in «Montalbán's Vida y purgatorio de San Patricio: Its Early Textual History», Bulletin of Hispanic Studies, 52 (1975), 227-34. Moll also notes Montalbán's Para todos (1632) and Tirso's Deleitar aprovechando (written 1631). Both are heterogeneous and have an emphatic moral content (Moll, p. 102). The effect of the ban on genre is probably worth investigating.

The British Library has a printed document referring to the remittance decree, pressmark 1322.l.9 (5). Perhaps the government intended the tax to replace the ban, but relented in the face of the booksellers' protests. Most booksellers employed lawyers to plead their case. One of the busiest was M. de Cabrera Núñez de Guzmán (see D. W. Cruickshank, «Some Aspects of Spanish Book-production in the Golden Age», The Library, V, 31 (1976), 10, n. 45). Others were Gabriel Rodríguez Escabias, Antonio Cabreros Avendaño, Ramón de Morales and Blas González de Ribero. J. M.
