The «rei don Joan» ('King Don Juan') is John II of Aragon (1397-1479), and «l'animós troià» ('the valiant Trojan') is John's brother and predecessor, Alfonso V, called «The Magnanimous» (1396-1479). As Annicchiarico explains, the epithet «troià» bespeaks a comparison with none other than Aeneas. Annicchiarico adduces a wealth of interesting data concerning these two monarchs (see 72-3, notes 39, 40).
